On the fifth floor of The Columbia Club in downtown Indianapolis, a boutique public relations firm mirrors a start-up agency in San Francisco. The winding staircase in this historic building leads to what looks like a block of hotel rooms. Yet, it is home to innovative businesses and eager entrepreneurs.
Cris Dorman, ’06, found his niche here. Leaving a political communications position in 2010, he moved blocks from the Statehouse to become a member of The Columbia Club. He wanted to create a branding and public relations agency similar to Cardinal Communications, a student-run public relations agency at Ball State, and replicate its environment of openness and collaboration.
Securing office space in the heart of the Circle City, Dorman opened Brandrenew to help a range of clientele promote fresh, engaging brands. Soon, its own start-up, Rock My Bow Tie, was up and running.
Working with a fellow Hoosier who is savvy in international trade, Dorman, a public relations major, launched Rock My Bow Tie to provide stylish and trendy neckties at a lower cost. His passion for upscale fashion, along with the affordability of starting a fashion brand in Indiana, made it the perfect fit.
“Indianapolis is my hometown, and I love the opportunities here. Those in business want you to succeed, creating a sense of camaraderie,” Dorman said.
Dorman’s company produced bow ties for the June retirement party of Dan Evans, who stepped down as president and CEO of Indiana University Health. That’s where one of the ties, which bore Evans’ likeness, found its way to the collar of Gov. Mike Pence. (Photo courtesy of Brandrenew)
As the name implies, Rock My Bow Tie features an array of signature bow ties, though the business recently added pocket squares, suspenders and regular ties to its roster of products. Its website offers guidance on how to tie a bow tie and create a custom-designed tie. Customers can buy the site’s signature product one at a time or commit to buying one a month for periods of three to 12 months.
“We’re making bow ties a part of the everyday trendy men’s wardrobe. We want to preserve this accessory,” Dorman said. “It’s nostalgic. We want words like ‘dapper’ to continue.”
Customers can feel good about their purchases, too, knowing a portion of the proceeds supports philanthropic causes.
“To be a Ball State alumnus in the branding and PR industry means that I’ve come from a strong journalistic and multimedia university that fosters an entrepreneurial spirit, integrity, brand recognition and results,” Dorman said. “My educational experience taught me to write well, research thoroughly, develop and maintain a brand and know my audience. This gave me a strong start.”

Men’s Fashion Companies in Indianapolis and New York Team-Up with Testicular Cancer Foundation to Raise Awareness
INDIANAPOLIS – Local men’s fashion accessory company Rock My Bow Tie is teaming up with New York men’s underwear company Tommy John to raise awareness, and funds, for the Testicular Cancer Foundation during the month of November.
As part of Men’s Health Awareness Month, Rock My Bow Tie and Tommy John are urging men everywhere to “Support Your Balls” during the month of November.
Released for a limited time only, both companies are offering mustache-themed products the proceeds of which will be donated to the Testicular Cancer Foundation. Rock My Bow Tie has designed a stylish and quirky mustache print bow tie.
The mustache theme coincides with the increasingly popular worldwide “Movember” movement, where the growing of mustaches during the month of November raises awareness of men’s health issues such as Testicular Cancer.
The Testicular Cancer Foundation (TCF) is committed to educating men about the dangers of testicular cancer. The Foundation distributes educational material and shower cards with self-examination instructions to over 1,500 zip codes across the United States. Additionally, Rock My Bow Tie sends out self check-up instructions with every order they distribute to customers.
One of the company’s co-founders has an intimate connection to the cause.
“As a testicular cancer survivor, I can honestly say I feel lucky to be alive. If not for early detection and seeking medical advice immediately, it is quite possible I wouldn’t be here today. Spreading the word about self-detection is the key to increasing the survival rate of this indiscriminate disease. The Testicular Cancer Foundation is a great partner to help accomplish this goal,” said Weston Sedgwick, Rock My Bow Tie Co-Founder.
According to Rock My Bow Tie’s other co-founder Cris Dorman, Testicular Cancer is the most common cancer among males age 15-35. It is also one of the most curable forms if detected early. In fact, the survival rate for cases discovered in the beginning stages is nearly 99%.
“The easiest way to detect Testicular Cancer early is by performing monthly self-examinations. It’s a quick and painless process that has the potential to save lives,” said Dorman. “We’ve always taken a proactive interest in supporting Testicular Cancer awareness. “It’s an important issue and we want to do whatever we can to help out.”
Ø Rock My Bow Tie contributes 10% of all online sales year-round to the Testicular Cancer Foundation.
Rock My Bow Tie offers several styles of high quality trendy men’s accessories at an affordable price. The company offers a diverse selection of bow ties, neckties, pocket squares, tie and lapel pins, cufflinks, shoelaces and more—all for $30 or less.
“Tommy John is an ideal partner for us,” says Cris. “Their underwear, shirts, and socks are top of the line when it comes to comfort and style, and they are making the same type of commitment towards fighting Testicular Cancer as we are.”
Together, Rock My Bow Tie and Tommy John are helping men all over the country look good, feel good, and stay healthy!

Bow ties still big at SEC Media Days (just don't ask players to tie them)
By Jerry Hinnen | College Football Writer
"I wanted to be the freshest guy here," Ralph Webb said with a smile.
I'd asked Vanderbilt's star sophomore running back about the decision to wear a bow tie to the 2015 SEC Media Days -- a choice that probably would have seemed utterly bizarre for a fashion-forward, globe-trotting college football player just a few short years ago, when the first person many would have associated with the bow tie was Orville Redenbacher. (Or, alternatively but no less removed from the world of fashionable 18-to-22-year-olds, E. Gordon Gee.)
But the bow tie has steadily become more and more commonplace among athletes looking to look their sharpest for the media's cameras, and the athletes at SEC Media Days have been no exception.
No fewer than six attendees from the first two days in Hoover have worn bow ties, including Florida All-American corner Vernon Hargreaves III, Auburn's hotly-hyped new starting quarterback Jeremy Johnson, and star Mississippi State signal caller Dak Prescott.
"I just wanted something different, a little more stylish," South Carolina linebacker Skai Moore explained, noting he'd already worn the bow tie for his National Signing Day announcement.
"I think I have the personality to pull it off," Texas A&M's Julien Obioha noted. "You've got to be a renaissance man, intellectual in multiple facets. And you've got to be good-looking."
As with Webb -- who said he'd wanted a look that reflected his "swag" -- the common thread between the members of the SEC Media Days bow tie crew was that wearing one still feels unique and personality-driven, even as more and more players make the same choice.
Noted bow tie aficiandoAndy Staples of Sports Illustrated said that in addition to feeling more comfortable, the look can also make sense for gentlemen of a certain height and heft for whom finding the right length with a traditional tie can prove ... challenging.
"If you've ever been in a big-and-tall store, you can buy extra-long ties," Staples said. "They look like bibs. You cannot get a cool extra-long tie."
But as Staples' recent Media Days experience has shown, bow ties come with one particular challenge of their own: getting them tied. Staples lended a hand to Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason when he wore a black bow tie to his initial SEC Media Days appearance in 2014, and he had to step in again Monday:
ouTube videos. I tried and tried and tried," Webb said with a shake of his head.
At least he had company.
"I'm not going to lie to you: my mom tied it," Moore admitted.
"It's a clip-on," Obioha said of his. "I have no idea how to tie this tie or a regular tie."
Prescott claimed he could have tied his tie, but did not Tuesday, saying he had been in "a rush."
But even if attempting to tie a bow tie might lead to some short-term frustration -- Staples said he'd also had to learn with the help of YouTube, in a two-hour session chockful of expletives -- it doesn't seem like they're about to fall out of SEC Media Days favor, not when the players wearing them clearly feel as good about wearing them as they have.

Rock My Bow Tie contacted me. As always, I was intrigued and am always willing to review ties.
Upon reviewing the site, I saw that there were many options to pick from, and so I decided to see if Cris was willing to pick a tie out using the photos on my Twitter account as a reference. To my pleasant surprise, I got a package with not just one but three bow ties — the Orange/Navy Vintage Plaid, Paisley with Crimson and Periwinkle, and the Dapper Dot (a Diamond Point) — with a fun note referencing my color palette.
I get great responses when I wear them. In fact, people really like the Orange/Navy Vintage Plaid tie. I even got several “nice bow tie” comments on my social media channels in addition to likes, favorites, +1s, and reposts. One of my favorite aspects of this tie is its thickness and cotton fabric; these factors make it easy to tie and form a good looking knot that holds its shape. In fact, while in a locker room when I was changing back into my nice clothes, I had an audience when putting the tie back on in the mirror. No pressure — even after a guy asking me about my bow tie tying prowess… Either way, the tie made me look good as I was able to easily and quickly tie it in a nice knot without much fuss.
So, you definitely need to check out the collection. There’s also The Bow Tie Club, which has a variety of subscription levels that vary in price and frequency of when one gets a new tie. Due to my experience with Cris picking out ties for me, I have faith in their skill in selecting ties for club members.
Bow Ties for Good
Rock My Bow Tie Testicular Cancer Instructions
Like other organizations, Rock My Bow Tie conducts philanthropy by donating a portion of its sales to the Testicular Cancer Foundation(TCF). TCF is an organization that raises awareness and educates men about Testicular Cancer “[s]ince the bow tie is typically a singularly manly type of thing, we thought it was appropriate that cancer of the balls (also typically a man-related thing) should be our philanthropic focus.”
In fact, a nice glossy card with testicular self exam instructions came with the ties. Yeah… Touching one’s balls brings out the immaturity in any healthy, normal male. However, it’s important since people who suffer from this cancer have viable treatment options — especially if it is detected early on.

rockmybowtie who believe that a bowtie should not cost an arm and your first born child. They believe that you can have a high quality bowtie at a cost that isn’t borderline extortion and they are able to hit the nail on the head.
Something that these bowties are phenomenal at is how easily they tie in to a great bow that fits near perfectly. That warning above is true. You will gain more attention with these spiffy ties around your neck. The designs you can choose from are fantastic. The bowtie of the month happens to be a mustache print and if you know anything about us, you know we appreciate a good ‘stache wherever we see one. You heard that right, a mustache bowtie which happens to be perfect for the great Movember movement. Oh, did I mention that part of the profit from the bowties are donated to cancer research? Well, now that I have told you, you have no reason not to go break the bank on these crazily awesome bowties.
Now, I know the question you’re begging to ask. You can wear these bowties in any setting your heart desires. Though, I would caution the use of a bowtie in a gym where neck restriction is not the best idea. Other than that though, rock the hell out of these bowties. The rockability of these bad boys really sets them apart. So much so that I had to create a new word to describe them near adequately.
Why would you wear a bowtie? That seems to be a rhetorical question but you wear one because you can. Do you have the balls to rock a bowtie with mustaches all over or pink with polka-dots? You should, you’re here on GearGent which means you already have good taste and should be willing to expand upon that. If you are not sure go ahead and check, and while you’re checking feel for bumps. A gentleman should never catch testicular cancer late.

Rock My Bow Tie, a designer and purveyor of trendy men’s bow ties, announced a new partnership with Tommy John Wear and the Testicular Cancer Foundation (TCF) urging men everywhere to “Support Your Balls” during the month of November.
Since the bow tie is a man’s accessory, Rock My Bow Tie decided it was appropriate that testicular cancer – also typically a man-related thing – would be an ideal philanthropic focus.
So for the month of November, Rock My Bow Tie and Tommy John Wear both developed “mustache-themed” apparel lines and will donate a portion of the proceeds to promote testicular cancer awareness through cash donations to the Testicular Cancer Foundation http://testicularcancer.org/
Since Tommy John’s underwear literally “supports your balls” on a daily basis, the trendy men’s undergarment company decided to take that support a step further this month by developing a limited edition Second Skin Mustache Collection. Five percent of the proceeds from this collection will benefit the Testicular Cancer Foundation.
Like Tommy John Wear, Rock My Bow Tie developed a customized mustache themed bow tie to accompany Tommy John’s “Second-Skin” mustache collection. Rock My Bow Tie Mustache Bow Tie - http://www.rockmybowtie.com/product/mustache-ties/
“To help support the Testicular Cancer research and awareness, we decided to donate twenty percent of proceeds from these trendy navy blue and red mustache bow ties to the Testicular Cancer Foundation,” said Cris Dorman Co-Founder of Rock My Bow Tie. “For the month of November, the bowties sell for only $20 a piece! All Rock My Bow Tie ties are afford-ably priced at $25.”
Additionally, Rock My Bow Tie designed a bow tie designed specifically for the Testicular Cancer Foundation. One hundred percent of the proceeds for this custom tie will go to the TCF.
“As a testicular cancer survivor, I can honestly say I feel lucky to be alive. If not for early detection and seeking medical advice immediately, it is quite possible I wouldn’t be here today. Spreading the word about self-detection is the key to increasing the survival rate of this indiscriminate disease and we feel the Testicular Cancer Foundation is a great partner in this regard.”
-Weston Sedgwick, Rock My Bow Tie Co-Founder
Testicular cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men ages 15 – 35. It’s not known what causes testicular cancer, however it has the best prognosis of any cancer if detected early. Most often, testicular cancer is discovered by patients themselves and is described as a painless or uncomfortable lump in the testicle. The shower is a great place to check, and it is recommended that men check at least once month. If testicular cancer is found before it spreads, it is almost always curable.
Both companies are encouraging customers to spread the movement through social media with the through their #Supportyourballs campaign. You can qualify to win a pair of @TommyJohnWear underwear or a bow tie from @rockmybowtie by following on Instagram or Twitter and posting a picture with the hashtag #Supportyourballs.

Rock My Bow Tie.
The company's motto: "Make the bow tie a common facet of the trendy man's wardrobe."
"So many guys say, 'I can't pull off a bow tie,'" said Dorman, who also owns Brandrenew, a marketing and public relations firm Downtown. "It's a misnomer."
Bow ties are good for all sorts of fashion. Dorman even suggests one with a casual shirt and pair of jeans.
There are certainly plenty to choose from at Rock My Bow Tie, from the spicy iguana to the modern paisley.
Each comes with a little fashion suggestion, such as this with the iguana tie: "Wear this bow tie and the world is your oyster. Dark jeans and a dark jacket will give you the most pop with this unique design."
Dorman and Sedgwick design all of the company's ties and fabrics. They average about $25 each.
The concept for Rock My Bow Tie was born from the two men's (both bow tie wearers) struggles to find a cool bow tie.
"We seemed to always find the same stereotypical designs and patterns," Dorman said. "We wanted to throw a little bit more color and also not be at that $60 to $70 price."
Besides the ready-to-buy tie, Rock My Bow Tie offers custom ties. Add a logo or get a tie in your wedding colors.
For now, the company is online only. But Dorman said he is working with a few local retailers to carry his line in their stores.
And never fear if you're a guy who just isn't sure how to rock a bow tie. There's a complete tutorial on the company's website.
